14/365 Gaining Speed

It was coming right at me...

I had to get the timing just right. This car was coming straight ahead. It would probably slam into my camera if I pushed it too hard. Good thing it wasn’t a real car though. It’s a replica, a toy that my son received for his 5th birthday from one of our neighbors. I figured it would be good to practice product photography and the use of reflections today. Photographing a product with it’s reflection bouncing of plexiglass underneath it is all the rage these days. You see it especially in mobile phone ads or other tech gadgets. This is essential for photographers, being able to recognize and duplicate trends. Or even better, starting them.

Below is my setup for this shot. I used one of those cheap LED lights to mimic a car’s headlights or a street light. A piece of glass from a coffee table was put under the car and a white paper backdrop under that. The black boards behind it, absorbed some of the light to make it look like it was outdoors at night. I set my camera down on the corner of the table and set the automatic 5-second timer. As it was about to go off, I pushed the car and held the light with the other hand. There you have it.
